Religious by nature, Durlabhsheth was a great devotee of Shri Saptashrungee Devi (a divine goddess situated on the hills of Vani near Nashik). Every year without fail, he used to travel all the way from Pune to Nashik to worship this goddess. Eventually, due to old age, he was unable to travel this distance and visit to worship her. With a great sorrow within, he prayed to her and apologized for not visiting her.
Overwhelmed with the devotion of Durlabhsheth, Goddess Saptashrungee appeared in his dream and blessed him that, “If he was not able to come to her, she herself would come and stay near him.” She further asked him to excavate on the mountain to the north-west of Pune to find her. Durlabhsheth then excavated the current Chaturshrungi mountain and found the statue of goddess Saptashrungee. Then, a temple was constructed here itself which gradually became the presiding deity of Pune.
